looking for F&M/Lancaster photos
Hey guys. I'm trying to make some Lancaster canon album art for my iPod. So I was wondering if anybody has/has links to any good scenery shots that I could use as a base image. (All my CTY photos are prints, and I don't have a scanner.)
Thanks! If anything comes of this, I'll post it to share. :)

A plug for the alumni database
(crossposted to cty_therapy
So, because I was stalk^H^H^H^H^H trying to look someone up, I actually logged in to MyCTY
for the first time and tried the alumni database. As it turns out it is very well designed. You can search by all sorts of things, like all CTYers living in Somerville, MA, or everyone who ever took Number Theory at Lancaster.
The catch is that in order to show up in the database, someone has to activate their account. This involves, as best as I can tell, actually logging in for the first time. If you are like me, you got your login sent to your parents' house (or whatever they have on file) on a piece of paper when the site was first created, and then you promptly lost the piece of paper. Fortunately, you can go to the lost password page and have them send another piece of paper, though! Or, you could just call them at the number they give. They are all friendly. I do not know if they will appreciate a flood of people calling all at once to get their login ids, but that's a problem they should want to have.
You should all do this, to make it easier for people to stalk^H^H^H^H^H find old friends.
After activating your account, you can choose to not have your record show up in searches by going to "Update Information" and selecting "Do Not Release any of my information or allow other alumni to view any information from my records through this system." So, no actual privacy issues.
This is unrelated, but I submitted the Saratoga site to LJ's schools directory after getting frustrated that it wasn't there. I was wondering why it hadn't shown up until I found that the school approval team (lj_schools
) profile is subtitled "welcome to Team Leaky Canoe". Okay, they are probably buried under pending requests. :P Anyway, eventually
that ought to show up as "Center for Talented Youth, Skidmore College". Someone who is feeling ambitious should go identify every site missing from the LJ schools directory and submit it. That person is not me.

x-posted to a bunch of communities
i've noticed a lot of people posting about this recently...
Dear 2006 Summer Program Participant,
If you recently received an email about a *2007* Summer Programs course assignment, please disregard it. It was sent to you in error. The problem stems from an email error only and does not affect student records in any way. Please accept our apologies.

dear all williams students, ctyers who know williams students, or even people who live near williams,
im planning a visit for two weekends from now (the 28-30 october) and i was wondering if there would be any ctyers there who would be willing to put me up for a few days, or let me know if that would be a good time to visit at all, what with midterms and all happening at a bunch of schools. if you dont think itd be the best time to visit, though, for whatever reasons, do let me know. to all other ctyers taking the sats tomorrow, good luck and godspeed.
sincerely, and with much love and sympathy,

... now it's 10 years gone
I just realised it's been 10 years (1996) since my last year at CTY (Skidmore session 1).
Wow. Time flies. I still remember people and things from CTY so vividly; it was most definitely one of the more significant events in my life. Ten years ago. It's hard to believe that it's been that long since I was in my mid/late teens. I'm 26 and those days feel like yesterday sometimes.

I didn't even realize it was the end of first session until my little brother got back from his tour of Dickinson on Friday and told me about how the CTYers were crying on each others' shoulders and stuff and how it weirded out the other people in the tour group. ;)
Since my nomore year ('01) I've always had CTY-related dreams during the summer - until this summer. It's really odd. (Though the dreams were always odd, too - I'd be perfectly aware that I was old enough to be an RA, and somehow be a student.) Does anybody else get those sort of dreams? CTYers at Lumos
Based on the recent Harry and the Potters entry
... I was struck by an idea.Any other CTYers going to Lumos this year?
I'll be teaching History of Magic during Night Classes and playing water Quidditch (a chaser for the Tsunamis).

You know you're getting Old when . . .
So I'm wearing an old CTY t-shirt right now. And I looked down for a moment and saw that it is the 15th anniversary t-shirt (ohhhh YES, you read that right--FIFTEENTH anniversary). And then I looked a little longer and saw that that was in 1995. And then I realized that was 11 years ago and that some spiffy 25th anniversary must have already passed.
Please tell me I'm not the only one who has moments like this.
And actually, I have older t-shirts too--back when they were really pretty ugly. I remember getting this t-shirt and being impressed that they came up with something that didn't look ugly that year.

I'm going to be spending the summer TAing for Duke TIP at Appalachian state, and was wondering if there are any other ex-CTYers out there who are doing the same. Not quite CTY, but it should be fun =)

Just FYI for all you Lancastrians:
Mr. (Rich) Groff, the old site director, is having some health issues.
He had open heart surgery two weeks ago. He had had a heart attack in his sleep, and went into the hospital with flu symptoms, and ended up having emergency open heart surgery later on that day. He's now out of the hospital and doing well. We're all expecting him to be back at school after christmas.
But if you could just keep a thought out for him, that'd be great.

Would any of you happen to know if there is a minimum age requirement for CTY RAs? I want to apply for the job this summer, and while I fit all of their employment requirements as listed on the website (two years of college, one year as a college RA, GPA above the reccomended one, one year of experience working with younger students, all the ambiguous character traits they feel they can empirically measure and quantify), I just turned 17 ten days ago and thusly will be 17 during the duration of CTY this year. Will this be a serious setback/a possible reason why they wouldn't hire me at all?

gifts to CTY in memory of Dr. Stanley
After Dr. Julian Stanley's
death last week, I know some people in this community were wondering about where and how to send contributions in his name to CTY scholarship funds. If you would like to make a gift to CTY for scholarships in memory of Dr. Stanley, you send it to this address:
Center for Talented Youth
Johns Hopkins University
5801 Smith Avenue, Suite 400
Baltimore, MD 21209
Make the check payable to "Center for Talented Youth, Johns Hopkins University," and put "in memory of Dr. Stanley" in the memo line, or send along a letter with the check. I'm sure they'd appreciate even $5 or $10 donations, and they would go towards helping kids go to CTY.

I'm not sure how many of you have heard about this, but Julian Stanley, the guy who started SMPY and later CTY, died at 87 on Friday. His New York Times obit is here

maybe the coolest thing ever
I just saw possibly the coolest thing ever.
It was a limited edition copy of the cold record for American Pie and next to it was a piece of paper that he used in the planning stages of writing the lyrics with crossouts and changes and stuff. I so almost bought it...maybe I should have.

Hamilton College-specific community
I've created cln_forevermore
a bit ago, for reminiscing/keeping in touch with/getting back in touch with other Hamilton College people.
Since it's not an active site anymore and hasn't been for a while, this is probably going to function more as a shout-out forum and an organizational thing where you can look and see which of your old buddies from back then have LJs by taking a gander at the member list on the info page and the friends list to see who's active and what's up with them. Maybe we can compile traditions in the community too -- I remember the first CLN crossdressing attempts back in '95. Anyone else recall any earlier than that there?
